Capturing and relaying the emotions of a
premature birth is hard because of the
shock of it all. But there is one story from
Layla's dad:
"Having seen Layla wired up; in an
incubator; us not being able to hold
her or touch her, mum still in
hospital and that the first 2 days
would be touch and go, I left both on the
second night around 9.30pm. I got in my car
and started to drive home, listening
to a CD
that I made only days before.
One of the songs I had listened to a
lot recently was a song by Athlete
called Wires, but I hadn't really
listened to the lyrics...until I drove
home that night.
The song is about a baby who's in
Layla's circumstance and of course, I
feeling the shock of the past 48 hours
and bottled up with so much emotion,
just cried my heart out and had to
stop the car because I couldn't see
through the fountain of tears. I
managed to get myself together and
eventually made it home deflated from
any happiness. Once Layla's mum came home, I
explained the song and the story, and
got her to listen to it. She too
cried, agreeing that it did explain
all that we were going through.
However, the songs ending has more
reference to Layla's health today then
it did when she was only 2-3 days old.
For me the song simply expresses the
yearning one has for their own child
and the need to know that they are
going to be alright".
