2 months premature and only 3 pound 10 ounces in weight.
Layla was born at 32 weeks on 13th May 2005, 10.15 am at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, Somerset.
Born with the cord around her neck, Layla needed immediate attention by the paediatricians as she was not breathing and once the situation was contained she was whisked away to a room where more important work could be carried out.

Three hours later both parents had yet to see their little girl and when they did they discovered her tiny body cocooned inside a state-of-the-art incubator with a multitude of wires and tubes.

Since that day Layla has undergone many tests; some mandatory, some for a reason; but all fears have been removed thanks to the hard work of the doctors and nurses at Musgrove Park.

From intensive care and incubation and then an open crib, today Layla remains on track and is now starting to show signs of eye and hearing development.

We hope that you will follow Layla's life throughout the next month and we thank you for visiting her website.

FASCINATING THINGS THE PARENTS DIDN'T KNOW BUT DO NOW.
When you have a premature baby it's amazing what you learn through the process. In fact, both parents had just started anti-natal and parenting classes but obviously missed some of the information that they would have learnt. But here are some interesting facts:

Babies grow excess amounts of body hair but loose this hair while in the womb. That is why Layla looked a bit hairy when born.

The sucking mechanism in a baby does not come to bare until 35 weeks old, which Layla is now showing signs of since her 35 week began.

Premature babies and even full term ones have breathing pauses that can worry parents. This is a natural occurrence and is well known. Rubbing the feet of the baby can help circulation.

Studies show that when moms of preemies breastfeed, the milk they produce is more rich in proteins and has slightly different fats than later breast milk. It's specially designed to help a premature infant through those first difficult weeks.

Even though some may think that premature babies may have future physical or psychological problems etc studies show that these relationships cannot always be defined. Just look at some of these famous people who were premature babies:

Albert Einstein (who also couldn't speak to age 3)
Charles Darwin
Isaac Newton
John Keats
Mark Twain
Napoleon Bonaparte
Renoir
Sir Winston Churchill
Stevie Wonder
Thomas Hobbes
Victor Hugo
Voltaire
Jean-Jacques Rousseau
